SUC Report Card (2023-24): General Secretary – Sai Sumanth Pothureddi

The General Secretary, Sai Sumanth Pothureddi built his campaign around the premise that as a representative of the GB, he would be open to students of BPHC, and always at their service, and that his purpose and aims would evolve with the needs and aspirations of the campus. Looking back at his manifesto, as of August 2024, out of the many main points in his manifesto, 2/11 have been completed, 5/11 have not been completed, and 4/11 were partially completed. Here’s the link to the manifesto. Let’s take a deep dive and analyze the manifesto.

  1. Bus Frequency (Completed)
The General Secretary pledged to improve transportation to and from the campus by increasing TSRTC bus frequency. In line with this, an additional bus was introduced in the afternoon to improve connectivity with the city.
  2. Accountability (Not Completed)
The General Secretary promised to convene at least 2 GBMs per semester to enhance the accountability of the council and ensure periodic feedback from the GB. However, only 2 were convened in the entire year, due to interference of SUC elections in the second semester.
  3. Low-Cost Transport (Not Completed)
The introduction of low-cost transport options to airports or train stations was not realized during the tenure of the Secretary.
  4. Fitness Vending Machines (Partially Completed)
A proposal was made to SWD for ‘Fitness Specific’ vending machines near SAC due to the high demand for items like protein bars, protein powders, protein shakes, and sports drinks. This initiative, however, was not completed within the Secretary’s term.
  5. Security and Lighting (Partially Completed)
Lighting was added to Rocks, but there were no improvements behind SAC or other key areas. Although the addition of security cameras was proposed, it was not fulfilled due to budget constraints. The initiative was taken by the Secretary, which, however, did not come to fruition.
  6. Reasonable Food Prices (Not Completed)
Contrary to promises, food prices on campus outlets were increased rather than decreased to satisfy students.
  7. Fest Working (Completed)
A considerable amount of work was done to ensure better running of fests, especially Pearl, to increase success rates of publicity campaigns by employing more efficient methods such as increasing advertising on social media, partnering with social media influencers, and increasing reach through mass media, to significantly increase fest attendance and brand value. Some level of pre-fest publicity and events were also conducted, along with some fest-time media coverage. Additional arrangements were made with transport providers and TSRTC to enhance campus connectivity to areas with a high density of colleges, to increase the overall footfall.
  8. Technical and Cultural Aspects (Not Completed)
The Freshers Guidance Program (FGP) was reintroduced without any updates or revamps, and Certifications of Appreciation were not issued to active club members.
  9. Hygiene and Sanitation (Partially Completed)
Some more trash cans were set up to prevent overflow in places of high waste generation on campus, but this was not done to a high capacity. Spaces around outlets were not revamped to promote sustainable disposal of waste. The food court area in front of Mess 2 was cleaned. The steps taken by the General Secretary in this regard, however, fell short of the needs of the campus.
  10. Change in Dates for Rixa and Renaissance (Not Completed)
Rixa and Renaissance were not organized in the first semester to promote early and better networking opportunities between freshers and seniors on campus.
  11. Mental Health (Partially Completed)
Discussions were initiated to collaborate with ‘Talk Campus’, a highly effective, inclusive, and confidential platform, to bring its benefits to the campus in addition to SA and MHSG. Aims to provide social connection in a non-judgemental environment, and provide a safe space for students to talk to each other. The General Secretary initiated steps towards this, however, failed to enact it in his tenure.

The following are the closing remarks by the Secretary at the end of his tenure:

As a General Secretary, Inventory Head, I could get inventory from the SWD office which my seniors could not. At the start of my tenure, there was a fee hike which the students were not happy about. After speaking to the administration they introduced GrayQuest. Although auto fares have not decreased, we are in talks with them. We hope they will decrease after the commencing of this year.
