Improving the sports environment on the campus was the main vision of Sports Secretary (girls) Shreenidhi Ramaswamy. Looking back at her manifesto, as of July 2024, out of the many main points in her manifesto, 5/11 have been completed, 4/11 have not been completed, and 2/11 were partially completed. Here’s the link to the manifesto. Let’s delve into her manifesto and analyze it.
- Intra-College Sports Events (Completed)
A lot of friendly matches had been organized, the frequency of which had increased during the beginning of her tenure. Colleges like Mahindra, IIIT, CBIT, and Nalsar participated in these sports events. - Facilitate the conduction of monthly sports workshops for beginners (Partially Completed)
As described in the Manifesto, it was aimed to encourage students to try out different sports and improve the competition within the campus. Although it was not conducted on a monthly basis due to midsems, compres, Arena, and other such events, there were workshops initially. A calendar had been released in the month of August-September, marking the workshops being organized by different teams, which increased participation. - Inventory (Completed)
A detailed inventory list was taken from each team and captain. According to the Secretary, there had been some funding issues on the side of the sports-in-charge, Gyanprasad Reddy Sir. However, equipment was procured and provided as soon as possible for all the teams according to their requests for inventory. - Monthly Infrastructure Maintenance (Not Completed)Infrastructure maintenance was not monthly since it was time-consuming and expensive, and had to go through a chain of command. However, the Secretary says that the maintenance was to the best of their abilities from the funds present.
- Professor and Student Sports (Not Completed)
This was aimed at organizing sports where students and professors could participate alike, providing the opportunity to interact and bond over a common interest in sports. They had this in the pipeline and also found professors who were interested. However, this could not be implemented due to the time constraint in the second semester, which was already sports intensive. - Emergence of New Sports for the General Body (Completed)
Kho-kho workshop was conducted at the request of the General Body. According to the Secretary, cricket for girls was organized since some were very enthusiastic about forming a team and playing friendly matches. Whichever sport was initiated by the GB was taken into consideration and steps were taken towards that. - Organize Match Screenings (Completed)
The IPL opener had been screened in collaboration with RAF. The Chess World Cup had also been screened along with more chess matches around the end of the year. - Building a Skating Rink or a road for Skating (Not Completed)
A level surface is required to build the rink, while our campus is on a slope. The Secretary had proposed an alternative to the road to Kannan Sir while the rest depends on finances. - Self-Defence Workshop (Not Completed)
This hasn’t been executed due to lack of time. - Setting up tents for downtime for ARENA (Completed)
There were tents set up near the Kabaddi, Football, Basketball, and most of the other outdoor grounds or courts. - First Aid Centres for ARENA (Completed)
First-aid kits were available in all of the outdoor grounds and were available to any player.
ARENA Referee Fiasco
There had been an issue with bad refereeing due to which one of the teams abstained from participating. However, referees had been changed and there were no further complaints.
The following are the closing remarks by the Secretary at the end of her tenure:
One of our biggest achievements was that we were able to take sports teams to IIM Indore’s sports fest and InterBITS, which happened in Goa, and it is a huge deal because these are 2 outstation trips with huge contingents, and for InterBITS, we had almost all of the sports teams with us, unfortunately we couldnt take all of them to Goa, because BITS Goa didnt have those teams. That taught us a lot about the organizational aspect as well. Apsrt from that, I would like to give credit to all the sports teams, they have performed exceptionally well in all the tournaments, organized by us and other tournaments like MU, state level chess, basketball to multiple tournaments, football, both boys and girls. The frisbee team had also gone to Goa in March for the national level championship with exceptional performance. Sports in BITS Hyderabad has stepped up and all teams are performing well. I really have to give credit to them. Rixa as well had a lot of teams and high participation, and it was really nice to see the GBs participation and love for the sports.
